DOU
Redefine Traditional Step-Down in a High-Acuity, Team-First Environment

At Huntington Health, our Definitive Observation Unit (DOU) offers a nursing experience that redefines the traditional step-down floor. Operating directly under our critical care service line, the DOU manages a highly acute, fast-paced patient population that challenges and expands your clinical skill set every single day.
Here, you aren't just managing standard transitions—you are handling advanced, low-volume, high-risk procedures and clinical complexities, including full NIH stroke certifications across our nursing staff. It is an elite, dynamic training ground perfect for ambitious nurses who want to master critical thinking in a highly supportive environment.
What truly sets our DOU apart, however, is a deeply rooted culture of absolute trust and camaraderie. Led by a management team that rose through the ranks of this very unit, we operate with a flat hierarchy where every individual—from student nurse interns and nursing assistants to core RNs—plays a vital role in the bigger picture.
We proactively tackle the stresses of high-acuity nursing by ensuring no one ever stands alone. On this floor, you can look to your left and your right and know with absolute certainty that your team has your back, whether they are covering your break or stepping in instantly during a crisis.
A Proven Launchpad for Internal Mobility
We don't just talk about professional development; we actively live it. Whether your ultimate goal is to climb the clinical ladder to the CCU or transition into nursing education and leadership, our unit is a celebrated springboard. Our own unit manager started here as a new grad 17 years ago!
Award-Winning Clinical Excellence
Work alongside a team that sets the standard for quality care. We are proud recipients of the globally recognized DAISY TEAM award. Additionally, the DOU is one of only two units across the entire hospital to earn the prestigious Quality Indicating Certification (QIC) award for outstanding performance in preventing CAUTIs, CLABSIs, and C. diff infections.
True Hands-On, Transformational Leadership
Experience a leadership style that values solidarity over bureaucracy. Our leaders practice "coat-off, hands-on" management—meaning when a code hits, you'll find our unit leadership right there in the mix with you, taking turns doing compressions and supporting the frontline staff.
